WATER FOR ALL

Today 32 water treatment plants have been established by SMVA across two states, providing safe drinking water to hundreds of thousands, many of whom had never had a clean glass of water in their entire life.

Can anything be more basic or more essential to life than clean drinking water?

Yet for millions of people in the South Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, there is no access to clean drinking water —a fact that has created a dire situation with often heart-wrenching consequences.

From newborn infants to the elderly, millions are suffering from the inescapable effects of drinking unclean water and water contaminated with high levels of fluoride or arsenic.

This situation was brought to the attention of Amma Sri Karunamayi in the year 2010 when water tests confirmed that contaminated water had plagued generations for countless years in the rural areas surrounding the ashram. To remedy this situation and allow communities to stand healthy and strong, Amma made the firm resolve to provide clean, potable water to those in need.

The SMVA Trust took immediate action and began what is now known as the Water Project, a program to install water treatment plants that provide accessible and safe drinking water to communities in need in South India.

Amma Sri Karunamayi has taken the stance that access to safe drinking water is more than a human need. It is a human right. As such, the SMVA has been mindful to make the clean water provided by the plants both accessible and affordable. Water treatment plants are located within each village and dispense water freely at a quantity of up to 20 liters per day per individual. There is no restriction or no prejudice based on religion, gender, social status, or belief system.

Clean water plays a large role in the rights of children, and in keeping young girls and boys healthy and in school. Access to safe water also is closely related to personal hygiene and dignity, keeping children free from the dangers of water-related illnesses. Clean Drinking Water for Healthy Children

SMVA Trust is affecting hundreds of thousands of lives by providing safe, accessible drinking water where it may never have been present. Water plants located within each village, like the ones shown on these pages, prevent disease, safeguard women, restore confidence, protect human rights, and alleviate many of the hindrances that prevent an individual from taking control of their destinies

There is currently a waiting list of villages that have requested water treatment plants and desperately require clean drinking water. Consider joining Amma in improving the lives of thousands of women and children by sponsoring the creation of a water treatment plant.
